New drug that significantly improved performance on a learning task in Essay

New drug that significantly improved performance on a learning task in human - Essay Example This electrical impulse is one unit of neural information. An electrical impulse flowing along the length of a neuron is called nerve impulse. Nerve impulses are unidirectional within a neuron – from the dendrite through the cell body and axon, to the axon terminals. In addition, neurons produce nerve impulses in an all-or-nothing way. For example, if the stimulus that a neuron receives is too weak to trigger a nerve impulse, nothing happens – the neuron does not initiate an impulse. However, if the stimulus is strong enough, the neuron does initiate an impulse. What happens when an impulse reaches the end of one neuron and move to another neuron? The junction between two neurons or between a neuron and a muscle is called a synapse. The two cells involved in a synapse do not physically touch each other instead they are separated by a small space. The cell that carries the impulse to the synapse is the synaptic cell and the cell that receives the impulse is the postsynaptic cell. When an impulse that is travelling along the postsynaptic cell reaches the end of the axon, it causes the cell to release molecules known as neurotransmitters. These molecules are released into the synapse and diffuse approximately 20 millionths of a millimetre to where they bind with receptors on the dendrites of the postsynaptic cell. When neurotransmitters bind to the receptors, the charge across the postsynaptic membrane changes and if the change is great enough, it triggers a nerve impulse, the nerve impulse then travels along the postsynaptic cell. Dopamine (DA) is a predominant catecholamine neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain where it controls a variety of functions including locomotor activity, cognition, emotion, positive reinforcement, etc. The chemical is naturally produced in the body (brain region). Dopamine, the neurotransmitter activates dopamine receptors. In addition,

Essential factors for personal development and success in the United Essay

Essential factors for personal development and success in the United States of America - Essay Example This essay will describe the factors that attribute to success within the American setting as reflected by Yang in his article. According to Yang, Asian Americans are having a difficult time within the American setting. Asian Americans grow up with Asian intrinsic values that prove very different from what the American culture upholds. Children born of Asian families in America have a unique set of values that defines the personality that they adopt. It is evident that culture plays a critical part in personality development, explaining why Yang describes how the Asian culture has molded them into individuals that exhibit significant differences from the Americans within the class setting, workplace and in relationships (Barrios, 2013). . However, Yang (2011) highlights that the impact of the Asian culture in their personality development has served them little good. In real sense, he laments that the Asian culture has led to the development of multiple stereotypes that serve as setb acks for people of Asian descent to succeed. Yang highlights that most of the Asian American score good grades and secure position in prestigious institutions within America. He highlights that the Asian culture of hard work and devotion makes them successful in school. However, multiple stereotypes associated with the Asian Americas have served to deny them chances in the workplace that conform to their academic achievement, making them, ‘paper tigers’ with impressive certificates but lacking opportunities. He highlights that such stereotypes have only served as a ‘black ceiling’ preventing many Asian Americans that they rightly deserve from their academic qualifications. He present nine examples and profiles of Asian Americans, and reveals how Asian attributes and stereotypes associated with the Asian American have denied them chances in the workplace and in relationships. Yang describes Asian Americans as ‘bananas’, highlighting that they ar e Asian on the outside and white in the inside, but is keen to mention that the two sets of cultures are incompatible. However, if circumstances are to prove different for any of the Asian Americans, they have to follow the advice that the author presents of having the willingness to do things differently. A change of attitude for the Asians, and their determination to overcome the stereotypes that pull them can serve help them become outstanding individuals. It is possible that the strength of ties described by Malcolm will be of critical importance to Asian Americans (Yang, 2011). Yang’s critique has given rise to a heated debate in the society. It becomes questionable what Asian Americans should do different in order to succeed. Apparently, they are doing well in academics, but are not securing jobs as expected despite their qualifications. Should Asian Americans abandon Asian values and adopt attributes defined by then dominant American culture? Gladwell Malcolm mentions in his essay ‘small changes’ that one should try to be different. Asian Americans are yet to experience full integration into the American culture. Although they live and school in America, their Asian aspects have remained evident. Evidently, Asian Americans can work together towards developing ‘strong ties’ as defined by Gladwell. Such strong ties will help them overcome the black ceiling established by the lack of complete integration into

Technology research paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Technology research paper - Essay Example Some of the reasons include media intrusiveness and little added value that the Picturephone had over the normal telephones. Some articles report that the Picturephone failed to hit the markets positively because it lacked a robust reference point for its take-up. A majority of the successful new technologies have reference points, which are not extreme, for the society to get. Certain new technologies may seem disruptive but with societal reference point, these technologies are likely to be adopted by the society if they provide incremental improvements to the new users instead of comprehensive divergence from the normal life practices (Coburn 33)i. Prior surveys, before the Picturephone was launched, revealed that the market consumers were uncomfortable with the concept of being seen in the process of a telephone conversation. The Bell System defied the customers’ desires and wants proceeding to develop the new technology which was regarded as a solution seeking a problem. The Picturephone did not succeed because it failed to address the problems of the customers in the market, hence, customers did not have a reason to purchase and adopt the equipment (Brown 16). The Picturephones were installed in certain areas, such as Chicago and New York, in the United States in the 1960s and the cost of making telephone calls using these new technology equipment ranged between $16 and $27 for every minute used to make a call. Only 71 patrons had acquired the picturephones within the first half year of their development and marketing. Unfortunately, within a span of six years, the patrons of the Picturephones had declined to zero (Kaigo 3)ii. The use of Picturephones in making telephone calls was considered to be intrusive and crossed the privacy boundary of the users. The Picturephones did not improve the information on the voice but only made little advances on the communication. The flop of the technology

Cross-Cultural Awareness Research Project Diary Method Essay

Cross-Cultural Awareness Research Project Diary Method - Essay Example Thus it is imperative that new skills and strategies are evolved to meet the emerging challenges with efficiency and unmatched proficiency. Interestingly, in the current environment of multicultural societies, reflective practices through diaries have become vital links to understand and improve outcome. One is able to reflect on issues and factors that have impacted the person. I have used the entries and content of my diary in discussing the various perspectives of the changing society, especially vis-a-vis international marketing. Various authors have also claim that diaries provide vital clues and techniques to improve and improvise productivity (Nadin, Sara and Catherine Cassell, 2006; Bolger, Niall, Angelina Davis, and Eshkol Rafaeli, 2003). I feel that cultural competency has emerged as a major issue within and outside the businesses community that impacts relationship building. Various authors Ghauri, Pervez and Cateora (2010) strongly contend that changing cultural dynamics are strong facilitator of change and significantly impact international businesses. Indeed, it can be described as the need to understand cross cultural values and adapt to the changing societal pattern of globalization. ... Impact of Globalization and technology A flawless and integrated movement of services, goods and people round the globe is known as globalization which has made this whole world like a global village. This globalization can be a resultant of opening global economy and increased association and link between trades of different nations. Globalization also relates to the liberalization of the import protocols of countries and welcoming the foreign investments in the foundation sectors of a country’s economy (Wrigley 2000). Globalization acts like magnets to attract the global capital through opening economies of countries to multinational firms. There are several indicators of globalization namely internationalization, liberalization, universalization and westernization. All of these indicators are explained ahead. Two Models for superior profitability (Industrial Organization model and resource based model) For a large company like Aceto Corporation, the industrial organization model suggests that external environment dominant have an impact upon strategic actions of the firm. According to this model it is shown that the industry in which the organization has chosen to compete has a greater impact on the performance than the decisions that the managers take inside the company. There are several industrial properties that determine the performance of the company like barriers to entry, economies of scale, product differentiation, degree of concentration of the firms in the industry and diversification etc. (Veliyath & Fitzgerald 2000). According to the resource based model, the resources of the firm includ e the capabilities, assets the organizational processes the attributes, the knowledge the information that it possesses. All these resources serve as input for the firms. The resources must have four attributes according to the VRIN framework that includes Valuable, Rare, Inimitable and Non substitutable. Batman the Dark Knight (2008) and Religious Views Essay

Batman the Dark Knight (2008) and Religious Views - Essay Example Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) the District Attorney is threatened by this action. Going by the situation he approaches Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and the Batman. As there are very little that could had been done by being within the boundary of law, Batman is asked to bring back Lau from Hong Kong. The Joker brings in a series of terrorism in the city and Batman again had to don in his black cloak and fight against the terror. Instead of following the league and reprocessing the super hero cliche, Nolan tries to depict his two archetypal characters that are the Joker and the Batman with an emphasis on religious relevance. Religious Aspect The directorial aspect of Nolan resemble with the Buddhist understanding, where the evil deeds of the movie have been shown as an effect of various adverse causes and situation. Unlike other superhero movie evil is not created out of vacuum here. In fact the joker has been portrayed as a victim of severe emotional and physical child abuse. The Distri ct attorney who is the protector of law also breaks the law of the city when he asks the Batman to do something which remains unresolved by law. The absence of good has been constructed through actions in the movie. The emergence of Two-Face in the movie reveals the dichotomy in the human nature and that no single human being is either a white character-full of virtues or a black character-full of vices, they represent shades of grey. Two-Face has also been symbolized by the fact that despite the economic crisis in the city of Gotham, the mafias and the Joker are able to keep small army of people. The movie depicts the joker as the most non- religious person and the Batman is the religious person who thinks for the good of the human kind. Respecting humanity is the essence of any religion in the world and hence Batman can be regarded as the religious character despite some controversies which does not acknowledge him as a Catholic and denotes him rather, as a Catholic who has drifte d away. A religious person is expected to follow certain rituals like paying a visit to the church. The Batman does not seem to follow these rituals and hence might lead to a controversy when regarded as a religious character. However while diffusing the bomb the Batman says, â€Å"If I had the time or the right – I’d say a prayer†. Again, the character of Two-Face is regarded as non religious in traditional sense. Even this has been projected as a villainous character as a result of severe psychosis. The movie reveals how human beings are vulnerable and get more influenced by Satan than by God despite the religious beliefs of some characters. Also the importance of rituals and good deeds or actions can be controversial at times while commenting on a character’s religiosity. Analysis of the ritualistic aspect of the movie The three main characters can be analyzed in the context of rituals and religious beliefs. Harvey Dent or Two-Face who was initially wh ite turns black in the end when he is killed. Batman is represented in shades of gray while the Joker is depicted in black shade. The Joker does not believe in ethics or religion. On the other hand, the Batman, through his actions symbolizes godly deeds but he does not believe in rituals. When the Two-Face is cured from his psychosis state, he is seen to wear the Taoist symbol on his belt. This might give an impression of ritual which according to Nye, is more
